Are these beams purely decorative?

Trying to get an idea whether these ceiling beams could be removed without any structural consequences

Thanks for any useful responses.

How old is the building?

Please remember: we're not all guys!

The house was built in 1983, designed by a well-known architect. It's not clear whether the beams are original, although that's highly likely, given that they fit the general motif of the rest of the house.

So, you're not going to take a chainsaw to a work of art?

If it's purely decorative, then I might; it supposed to be bad luck to sleep under exposed woodwork. While I'm more of a rationalist sort of person, there have been some health issues with the current occupant.

They're definitely structural...

Thanks, I'm tempted to think that this roof is done the same way, since that could be hidden in the high ceiling, and the lower beams are more for architectural appearance.

You have to take a peek... else wear a hardhat to bed...

Without knowing what's on the other side of the wall though, in either case, it's not possible to say.

Zoom into the photo and look at the large vertical black column beyond the door. I would say that is providing a LOT of support to that wood frame wall. If they have something similar on the other side of the door then those high braces are not the only supports in play.

I think that's actually the frame of the sliding door. If you look above the sliding door to the window above, there's not anything extra visible there
