When did the engineering world go soft? I know I'm going to ruffle a few feathers with this post, probably even get red flagged!

I am seeing a lot of posts about crappy jobs, sh*t bosses and the likes.

Grievances are usually under paid, over worked, boring jobs, unethical behavior and unappreciated. Most of these posts are followed by a justification, like:
1. I wouldn't be able to get a job anywhere else
2. Engineering is boring
3. There are no ethics in the office

I willing to put it out there that this only happens if you let it (to an extent). Why not take action;
When the boss says do this and you know it is unethical, well tell him to stuff the job.
When the pay is no good, take action and confront the boss, or next time you’re on site as the laborer how much he makes an hour, then watch him for a few minutes. Maybe your pay is good, compared to the rest of the world, not just lawyers and politicians.

When you get bored, take a new job be willing to look under all stones, good jobs don’t fall from the sky.
But whatever you do, don’t let the world beat you down, put up a fight.

As one of my favorite quotes goes “my heart is for my family, my balls are for business”, start using your balls (if you have them).

Arguing with an engineer is like wrestling with a pig in mud. After a while you realize that they like it

Misery, like happiness, or yawning, is often contagious. Also, people often bottle up their feelings, and require some sort of trigger to vent, not unlike having some sort of pressure-relief valve.

It just requires someone to make the first move, and then you have a snowball effect, and there are people crawling out of the woodwork to air their grievances. I assume it's cathartic and therapeutic.

...when I was a lad, we had REAL whining, not this wimpy stuff you get nowadays. We had to walk uphill 3 miles, in the snow, to do our whining...

I forgot to add, that is a classic clip , not by Monty Phython.

You had snow, you lucky *#%&)! We had to strap babies onto our feet and walk through burning coals, to the edge of a cliff, and jump off before we were allowed to whine.

Thanks for that updated version... good humor is timeless.

What's great about this one is that you can see these comedic greats cracking up at what must be absolutely old hat, so you can kind of imagine how hard it must have been for all the others to keep a straight face while doing the routine.

Having spent far too much time in that stupid 'bitter about engineering thread' I've come to realize that yes, at least some of us are soft, even if all we had was gravel for breakfast when we were kids.

You were lucky!

I have worked with plenty of people that were bottom of the barrel, which were all eventually let go, just not soon enough. Many of them being older. I think that was my only complaint. I was around 25 at the time. From some point in there I knew I wanted to start my own company.

I started the Civil Engr company at age 30 and now 1 year later we are still around. Not all of us younger guys are a bunch of softies. Besides if you think you can do better there are plenty of options to make your situation better.

I know quite a few people who work very hard that I graduated with and don't complain.

Kenat,
I must commend you for your effort in the 'bitter about engineering thread' I have been cheering you from the start. I have to say zdas04 comment reflected my thoughts, every time I have gone to post. All I could muster was a similar post, however not as well worded.

Brandoncdg,
This wasn’t/isn’t aimed at young engineers or old engineers; this is aimed at the people in life whom have lost the will to battle.

Rowingengineer - not sure I deserve commendation for a find display of one of my character flaws - inappropriate persistence. Sometimes I just can't let things go even though it would be better for me - and sometimes others - if I did. Anyway - thanks.

You do it better than I do!

Hey Kenat...inappropriate persistence is the mark of a good engineer!! Go brother.
