Hello all!

I'm designing a gymnasium structure in a country where no building codes apply. Engineer's judgement only.

This structure includes a basketball hoop suspended from the roof. I have found a reference specification that provides live loads for a basketball hoop in use (e.g. player hanging on the rim). The specification references AS1170.

Spec said:
Figure 1 presents imposed actions [Q] in terms of AS1170. The loads are consistent with the rigidity and stability proof test loads specified in EN1270, based upon a load factor of 1.5 incorporated in the 1.8kN force F2A and a prototype load test factor of 1.2 to allow for variability of units. In addition to the requirements of EN1270 forces F1 & F3 may act in either the + or – direction.

I'm not familiar with AS1170 (and don't have access to it). Would you expect the loads [Q] to be on an ASD basis, LRFD basis, or something else entirely?

Thanks!

All design in AS/NZS1170 is LRFD based. The usual load factor for live loads is 1.5 in AS/NZS1170.1.

I believe based on the text provided that the load has been derived based on prototype testing. Only thing I'd make sure of is whether it was tested using dynamic loading vs slowly increasing a static load, seems logical given how the load is applied in reality to a hoop.

So your ultimate design load would be 1.8*1.5*any dynamic factor.

perfect, thanks Agent!
