Hi All,

I was having a debate with a colleague today about the use of shear amplification on header beams (coupling beam). I was of the view that it forms the core box and is a "wall" thus requires the amplifier; however she disagreed as "it's not a wall"?

Any thoughts or opinions?
Thanks

Yes, all shear forces need to be scaled up by Sp/mu, whether it is a vertical wall, column or linking beam in a wall. Or, it needs to follow the provisions where the shear force designed is greater than 1.6 times the shear demand which with result in the ultimate bending capacity of the beam. Flexural capacity needs to be reached before the shear capacity otherwise the structure is not ductile I have been told.
