Section 6.1.1 gives that Table 3 minimum wall thickness values and the equation in Mandatory Appendix VI are essentially the same.

How are these values related to material allowable stress, ultimate strength, and yield strength? For example, if I've got a valve body made out of 316, the wall thickness requirement would undoubtably be greater than that for a body made out of Inconel. What materials (and/or say yield strength "range") can I assume are applicable to the data in Table 3?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The thicknesses are the same for the various listed materials, but the P-T ratings differ for the material groups. The thickness therefore must be based on the lowest strength group from the listed materials.

The reason I always heard was that for a particular size and pressure rating from Table 3 of B16.34, the material of the valve never matters is so one wooden pattern can be made with one wall thickness and then it can be used for any and all materials.
