ASME B31.1 & Section I material identification

Is there a requirement for Pipe spec markings and heat numbers to be transferred before cutting a pipe into pieces to ensure identification and traceability of every piece in the above ASME Codes for Code work? ASME Section I PG-77 only refers to plate identification. If there is please give the applicable section in these Codes.

This is a requirement if your ASME Quality Control/Assurance Manual states this for all materials. Otherwise, no, it is specifically for plate materials.

Just realize that if you are a manufacturer and your customer's spec calls for material traceability, you may have a lot of material rejected.

NCA-3856 (c) states " Identification marking shalll be transferred to all pieces when material or source material divided.

Also read NCA-3856.2 and NCA-3856.3

we don't build section 1 stuff, but on our section VIII stuff, we tranfer heat numbers with a paint pen and record on material log of our traveler (material tabulation report)

some pipes are too thin to stamp on
 
Marking is a requirement in Code Work for every material, plate, pipe, nozz/fittings, attachments, your QCManual should indicate how and when to mark materials in compliance with the Code.

UG-77(a), UG-93(a)(2), and UG-94 (just a few that I found) explicitly state that material markings required by the applicable Section II material specification must be transferred to each new piece, both for traceability and to satisfy the Inspector.

If the material specification does not require marking, UG-93(a)(3) applies, which requires an equivalent system be described in the Manufacturer's QC Manual "such that the Inspector can determine that it is the material identified in (a)(3)(a) above."

UG-93(a)(4) gives additional guidance on piping/tubing that isn't long enough to adequately mark (color coding, etc.).
 
Ah...did not realize that you were asking about Section I material markings. My apologies - at least anyone interested in Section VIII Div. I requirements knows where to find them now. :)
 
Heat lot traceabilty is not required for pipe materials under ASME I and B31.1. Re ASME I, review A-302.4 Material Control requirements to be included in your Quality Contriol System.

that is totally incorrect.
If you must have an MTR then rhe heat is there and it may be the only way to trace the pipe to the original nfr/mill.

Heat traceability is a common practice specially for pipe >1.1/2" NPS

Whereas we have assembled and Stamped over a hundred power boiler during the past 14 years, permit me to disagree. While MTR's are obtained for all received pressure piping, transfer of heat marking to all cut pieces and/or heat mapping is not required.

not tracing the materials/pipe is a code Violation.
I would like other opinions here. look that everyone is quite.
Do we have an inspector here to interpret the Code?
From a code requirement point of view.
I am required not only by my QC manual but it is there because the review team required it way before audit because if found the QC Manual does not address it, I will loose points. I had a 100% pass on the last review.
If you know Mr. J. Lockhart then you know what I am talking about.
I tell you what? I will put an interpretation to all reference Committees.

ASME Code paragraph PG-77 specifically discusses plate materials. However, because coded marking systems are widely adopted within the ASME Codes as an alternative to the full identification marking transfer (such as that defined in paragraph PG-77.2 for plate materials), traceability to the complete identification markings is required by general Code paragraph PG-5.

The Manufacturer who orders pipe material for a Code application is responsible for a material control system that ensures that the proper material is used in Code construction. The material control system provides methods acceptable to the Authorized Inspector for assuring that only the intended material is used in Code construction. The Manufacturer's certification, properly countersigned by the Authorized Inspector, may be accepted as sufficient evidence of Code compliance

Including plate, any material can be code marked for traceability. and always per the AI acceptance.
warning: some AI will not give you the green light unless convinced that the effect and record keeping is good.
Most AI would like the Heat No. on the pipe and plates so their job gets easier.
CMTR's are still a requirement.
