I am in the process of registering one of our refrigeration system designs under ABSA. The engineer reviewing our documents said he needs us to do a proof test on the condenser coil which is part of the refrigeration system.

ASME B31.5 paragraph 504.7(c), says the heat transfer components should withstand a proof test pressure of 3* design pressure, but doesn't specify the test temperature, test medium or the duration of the test.

What should be the test conditions for this test?

Proof tests are done with water at ambient temperature and slowly brought up to pressure and held for a minute or so. They also must be witnessed by an Authorized Inspector and the report has to be signed off by them. I would take the component to failure. ABSA doesn't like things that aren't done to VIII-1 UG-101 for proof test, so failure would be a better option if you can't do it to UG-101.

See Chapter VI Examination, Inspection and Testing. It's very clear.

@Cobra17 What is the minimum burst/failure pressure required to pass the test? Is it 3 times of the design pressure??

@r6155 I looked at chapter VI of ASME B31.5 and found no information regarding proof test, though it talks about pressure tests and Leak tests. Can you please explain ?

Depends on your MTR's of the specific test product. You have to adjust for the materials strength over then minimum. See UG-101(m)

Are you sure the engineer requires ASME VIII Div 1 UG-101?
If so, why UG-101?
