Hello Community,

My question is about the ASME Code edition specified on the Mill Test Report. I see some reports specify the edition like ASME SA240/15 meaning the material is certified to Code edition 2015.
Now that 2019 code edition going into effect, which edition years do we need to accept?
[ol 1]
[li]As long as the material is certified to ASME Code (irrespective of the edition) it is acceptable.[/li]
[li]You need to verify the Chemical & Mechanical Properties of the raw material as shown on the MTR against latest ASME Code requirements to accept[/li]
[li]Compare ASTM standard edition range the 2015 ASME Code is accepting with 2019 Code edition, if both ASME editions accept the same ranges of ASTM standards, accept the material. In case the 2015 ASME code accepts wider range of ASTM standards than 2019 ASME Code edition, then reject.[/li]
[/ol]

I know it is confusing but this is the situation I'm going through right now.

Let me know what is your opinion?

Thanks,

The one on the MTR must match the one on your PO.
When using the Code you are obliged to order to a specific revision.

Thank you for the response.
I'm not clear on this.
Our PO doesn't specify year of the ASME code edition at the moment.
Let's say I will revise the PO to specify ASME SA240-2019, how many mills will be able to provide me raw material meeting this edition which is only in effect few months now.
If I can accept material specified with previous edition codes, how far I can go?

The 2019 Edition does not become mandatory until January 1, 2020.

True! We are reviewing all drawings and procedures and updating as required to meet 2019 Code.
Nevertheless, even if I delay the implementation, beginning January 1st, I will have the same question.

I think that UG-10 might be helpful for your case.

I looked up UG-10 and it is for unspecified material, not applicable for my case. Material is identified with ASME edition, but not to the latest edition. What is the criteria to accept/reject material?

I think that for your case UG-10(a)(2) is applicable.
You have a raw material with a complete certification from the material manufacturer but the material identified with a specification not permitted by the code edition.
In you case: SA-240 in accordance with Section II-A 2015 for edition 2019 applications.

I think the OP needs to know where (in the Code) is it specified which year of the relevant ASME SA/SB spec is applicable for the specific Code section under consideration. E.g. when working to VIII-1 2017, do you need ASME SA-105 2013 or ASME SA-105 2017?

If you work with VIII-1 Edition 2017 you need to follow Section II from the same Edition.
For example:
Design Code: ASME.VIII-1, Edition 2017.
For the materials: ASME.II-Part A from the same Edition - 2017.
In the specification for SA-105/SA-105M you will see that it is Identical with ASTM Specification A105/A105M-05.

For the materials: ASME.II-Part A from the same Edition - 2017.

That I understand

In the specification for SA-105/SA-105M you will see that it is Identical with ASTM Specification A105/A105M-05.

Correct, but you need to order SA-105/SA-105M, so the A-spec plus year doesnt help that much. Which year do you specify for SA-105/SA-105M? Thats not called out for in IID, afaik.

E.g. when working to VIII-1 2017, do you need ASME SA-105 2013 or ASME SA-105 2017?

Exactly. Most of the time ASME SA-105 2013 is good for use when working with VIII-1 2017, but where in the code it says what is acceptable or not?
Thanks for clarification.
Hope somebody can answer [bigears]

See ASME Section VIII Div.1, Appendix 43, 43-3.

OK, we're getting somewhere, but honestly I still dont know exactly.

Say we need to use VIII-1 2017 for a stainles steel PV. Shell is made of smls SA312 TP316 pipe. Using IIA 0-SA450. SA312 in IIA is based on A312/A312M-15. When buying SA312 pipe, do we need to spell out SA312-17 TP316, since we use the 2017 code edt? So if wqere using VIII-1 2013, we wouldve specced SA312-13 TP316?

The Purchase documents need to indicate the Edition of the Construction Code. App. 43-3 explains how to verify the acceptance of the ASTM year. It is also indicated on the cover page of each Sect.II Material Specification. In smaller font under the MS. Suggest you discuss with your AIA.

Thanks David, thats the reference I was looking for.

I'm not asking about acceptable ASTM year. My question is about ASME edition specified.
My construction code is 2017, material in question is certified to ASTM/ASME A/SA 106B-2015, Now how do you verify/accept this material that is certified to ASME 2015 code? as you know it's not practical to get ASME 2017 material always. And ASTM 2015 is not included in APP II yet.

Read the Appendix...not just the table....including the examples given. Shouldn't have to spoon feed you.....
