ASME IV versus ASME VIII Div 1

How does ASME IV compare to ASME VIII Div 1 for potable hot water tanks in industrial applications such as tempered water for safety showers? i.e. Is an ASME IV hot water tank suitable for warm water for safety showers if the temp is below 210F and pressure below 160psi? Or is ASME VIII Div 1 the applicable code?

U-1(c)(2) Based on the Committee’s consideration,
the following classes of vessels are not included in the
scope of this Division; however, any pressure vessel which
meets all the applicable requirements of this Division may
be stamped with the Code U Symbol:
(g) a hot water supply storage tank heated by steam
or any other indirect means when none of the following
limitations is exceeded:
(1) a heat input of 200,000 Btu/hr (58.6 kW);
(2) a water temperature of 210°F (99°C);
(3) a nominal water containing capacity of
120 gal (450 L);

You can use either Code for water storage tank. most water tanks are made to SEC-VIII-1 because most shops do not have the sec IV lic.
Sect IV is easier to build if you have the proper Code Stamp.

Hi,
The standard domestic (potable) hot water storage tanks are usually built per ASME Section IV with HLW Code Stamp. Max design temperature is 210 F and MAWP 150 psi. Such tanks usually have anticorrosive lining inside.
