ASME IX - Flange face restore welding

Hello all,
Can the restore welding/build up welding of a flange face be seen as fillet weld?
This in context of the ASME IX QW202.3 (range of qualification for material thickness).

Not sure if this is a section VIII issue, but if it is see UW-42(b).

Thank you for your response.
The in this case the flange face has been repair welded by a company which holds a PQR (groove weld) which is valid for material thickness T=25mm.
In practice the component has a material thickness T=45mm. The PQR is normally not valid for this material thickness (QW202.3 states that the base material thickness shall be in accordance with QW-451, so this will be 2*T).
The repair company now states that the flange face repair is a fillet weld, which has no limitation on base material thickness according to QW202.3(A).
In my opinion a weld repair/restore on a flat flange face is not classified as a fillet weld and QW202.3(A) is not applicable in this situation.
what is your opinion in this ?

IMHO it is a partial penetration groove weld - definitely not a fillet weld.
Will see if I can find any interpretation on this,

What is the construction code ?

This is from B31.3 and it clearly shows base metal build-up is not a fillet weld

331.1.3 Definition of Thicknesses Governing PWHT
(a) The term control thickness as used in Table 331.1.1
and Table 331.1.3 is the lesser of
(1) the thickness of the weld
(2) the thickness of the materials being joined at the
weld or the thickness of the pressure-containing material
if the weld is attaching a nonpressure-containing material
to a pressure-containing material.
(b) Thickness of the weld, which is a factor in determining
the control thickness, is defined as follows:
(1) groove welds (girth and longitudinal) — the
thicker of the two abutting ends after weld preparation,
including I.D. machining
(2) fillet welds — the throat thickness of the weld
(3) partial penetration welds — the depth of the
weld groove
(4) material repair welds — the depth of the cavity to
be repaired

(5) branch welds
 
ASME Section IX has a definition for buildup. It has nothing to do with fillet welding. Your vendor is trying to pull a fast one.
 
If it is ASME VIII Div 1 the contractor is correct

UW-42 SURFACE WELD METAL BUILDUP
(a) Construction in which deposits of weld metal are
applied to the surface of base metal for the purpose of restoring
the thickness of the base metal for strength consideration;
or modifying the configuration of weld joints
in order to provide the tapered transition requirements
of UW-9(c) and UW-33(b) shall be performed in accordance
with the rules in (b) and (c).
(b) Procedure Qualification. A butt welding procedure
qualification in accordance with provisions of Section IX
shall be performed for the thickness of weld metal deposited,
prior to production welding
 
DekDee....Not sure how UW-42 shows the contractor correct. Certainly shows it is not a fillet weld. How deep is the groove?...Less than or equal to 25mm ok, greater = not ok.

Since you are depositing weld metal on the surface, I would say the depth of groove is the depth of deposited weld metal.
 
That is my point...IF the groove (deposited weld metal) is less than or equal to 25mm. The WPS they propose is good.

As i understood the deposit thickness t is not similar to the base material thickness T. According to m the base material thickness T should withon the limits on the PQR. When the base material is thicker as in the PQR we might have a difference in material structure due to a quicker cooling rate (800-500degrees line is steeper due to 3 dimensional cooling). The hardness might increase due to this higher cooling rate.
the deposit thickness is similar to the restored welded material thickness and is within the limita of the pqr (normally 2t)
 
May i ask why you dont agree?

According ASME IX , QW 256, T qualified is an essential variabel (see QW-403.8). QW403.8 refers to QW-451, which states range base material thickness T as 2*T.
