Hello, i have a question about QW 404.12 in case of GTAW process with impact test requeriment (-196ºC).
If a filler metal classification (ER 316 to ER 308) is change in the same SFA specification (Both filler material are A5.9), i must requalified a PQR.
But, there is several exeption (maybe 404.12 e and f) that maybe allow me to change filler metal from ER316 to ER308 without new qualification.

Thanks

What is the code of construction? If it is ASME Section VIII,
Div 1 and the MDMT is -196 deg C,QW-404.12 (e) and (f) do not apply. See UHA-51(e) Exemptions from Impact Testing for Welding
Procedure Qualifications. Read through this carefully.

Hello metengr,

but just taken into account QW404.12: it is possible to change a filler material ER 308 for ER 316, if the original PQR was qualified with ER 308 (with impact test requeriment)?

About the desing code i am not sure if it is ASME VIII, the only information is for valve for services at -196ºC.

thanks

Yes, provided that the deposited weld metal for the weld in question is not subject to impact testing per the design Code.

If the deposited weld metal is subject to impact testing under B31.3, you may not change the classification grade of the welding filler metal. If the proposed weld is not subject to impact testing, the filler metal classification/grade may be changed.
