Notice how VIII.1 referes to BPVC II Table 1A for Allowable Stresses but BPVC VIII.2 refer to BPVC II table 5A. Many materials (like A-53 and P235) are listed in table 1A but not on Table 5A or on BPVC VIII.2 table 3-A.1....So, A-53 and P235 are suitable materials if you use methods in VIII.1 but not if you use methods in VIII.2....how does that make sense? What if there is a design that is ok using VIII.1 but you want to check it using FEA methods discussed VIII.2 Part 5, does it instantly fail because the materials are not listed for use on VIII.2 Table 3-A.1?

Different code, different rules. VIII-2 is a.o. for higher pressures and includes other, more difficult engineering methods (i.e. requiring more expertise). Im not surprised that puts more requirements (i.e. restrictions) on materials allowed.

It makes sence to exclude some materials because of the greater allowable stress permitted in Div 2. SA-53 can be ERW welded, EFW welded, continuous welded or seamless and the testing requirements are not so stringent.

Exactly what I was preparing to write.
Div 1 and Div 2 have very different approaches, and that affects design methods, materials, and inspections.

Not making sense all. Material won't tell if it is Div 1 or Div 2. Stress is stress. The allowable stress can be intentionally made lower if code has a concern in Div 2. I faced the same issue in the past for a common low alloy steel that allowed in Div 1 but not in Div. 2.

 

Construction Code rules take precedence over other Section II-x, V and IX, and there is a rationale behind every rule.

chris456s - if you are performing an FEA for a VIII-1 vessel, please follow the rules of Appendix 46. What you are asserting is incorrect (that you can't do an FEA because a material is not listed in Table 3-A.1.
