I am looking for some help regarding the ASME Section VIII code. I work for a fabricator that is certified to ASME Section VIII Div. 1. We had a customer approach us on a vessel that has an MAOP of 10,000 psi. Does this fall under Division 1? Or will I have to use my calculation software under Division 2? Or does my shop have to be certified under Division 2? I have talked to my AI who stated that Division 1 only covers up to 3000 psi. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

DLind2005, you can work pressures over 3000 psig under Div 1, but see U-1(d), "deviations from and additions to...". Not straightforward. Div 2 might be usable, Div 3 might be usable, but your shop has to be certified to each.

Pass on it.

Mike

"No Bid" that job. Your AI is right [as they usually are]. U-1(d) states " . . not exceeding 3000 psi . . ."
And your estimators will probably have trouble figuring out fit-up and welding time/costs on something thick enough to be safe at 10K psi.
