Where does the ASME Pressure vessel code end and the ASME Pressure Piping code begin?

Our vessels have pipe stubs that we weld our piping to. Which code is that first weld subject to?

Do you have a copy of ASME B&PV Code, Section I or VIII? If so, there is a diagram that shows Code Jurisdictional limits. This should answer your question.

If you don't have a copy of either Code book, and based on your post above, the first butt weld off of the nozzle on the pressure vessel falls under B31 Power Piping. The nozzle weld prep is under ASME B&PV Code, Section VIII, Div 1.

To clarify metengr's response a bit, the "spec break" occurs at the weld prep on the nozzle. The weld deposit is B31.x piping. The weld is subject to piping code rules. Yes, it is recognized that some of the Section VIII material on the nozzle will be affected by the welding process... This does not affect the spec break.
