Hello all,

Is there an ASME code for alterations/modifications of pressure vessels?
I am trying to find requirements for removing a nozzle to make way for a bigger nozzle (as long as it still passes the requirement, i.e. pressure, plate thickness, etc.)
I know NBIC has information but I do not know if ASME has one.

Thanks in advance,

The ASME vessel codes are for initial construction, not for maintenance or modification, refer to the NBIC codes.

First, consider using a somewhat more descriptive subject line. You'll draw more interest and possibly get more replies. I almost skipped it.

ASME does not have vessel specific post construction guidance. As you know, the NBIC and API-510 generally throw you back to the original code of construction for design rules. The ASME does provide some guidance for general post construction activities related to pressure equipment and piping in ASME PCC-2 Repair of Pressure Equipment and Piping. In your situation, this document is intended to be worked along with NBIC and Section VIII.

Thank you both for the help, it is much appreciated

If you are modifying the existing nozzle and replacing it with a larger one, you will have to run calculations for your modification per the original code of construction. (Not necessarily the original *edition* of the code - you could use the current edition of the code if your vessel meets certain criteria.) Follow NBIC and API 510 and run your calcs in the appropriate edition of Section 8.

ASME PCC-2 covers replacement of nozzles with larger ones, but refers you back to original code of construction for the design of it.

I will take a look at that, thank you KLee777
