Hi all,

Is a relief valve allowed to use in PV since it might not be able to the event of sudden pressure rise?

Definition of relief valve in ASME: -
A relief valve is a pressure relief valve actuated by inlet static pressure which opens in proportion to the increase in pressure over the opening pressure.

You need to design your system so that the pressure doesn't rise above 10% of the MAWP.

If you have a potential for an explosive rise in pressure or gas volume then you might need a bursting disc.

There are actually three different types of Pressure Relief Valve (PRV), they are safety valve, relief valve and safety relief valve. Please find the link below for your reference.

However, one of the vendor proportional relief valve is not certified to ASME and not allowed to be used as ASME Boiler & PV Code safety relief devices.

Therefore, my question is : "Is all relief valve not allowed to be used as safety devices for PV?" :)
 
I can't access the quora story, but the wording sounds dubious to me.

If you're going to quite "ASME" please quote the actual ASME code (ASME publish hundreds), the section number and if possible the relevant section so we can all see what you're talking about. It's easy to take one section out of context without knowing where your selective quote comes from.

But you seem to have answered your own question - the vendor makes it very clear that their particular valve is not certified as a safety relief valve to ASME VIII.

You're not giving us any real detail here such as MAWP, pressures of this mysterious valve, the actual Safety valve pressure etc

If you have an ASME pressure vessel, you need an ASME relief valve.

That device, which explicitly says is not certified by ASME, does not qualify.
 
Per OP quote, it looks that the Swagelok R series valve is made as a "relief valve" and to be used for the overpressure protection for the process of small tubing size but high pressure application.
Basically, every system, i.e. PV, piping, instrument tubing, etc., needs to be protected using a relief valve in case it can potentially be over-pressurized. But, it doesn't mean that one may use "any" type of relief valve to the specific application unless the safety device is complied with the required Code and Standard.
