ASME requirements for Certification of Material

Hi everybody,

In our company we are used to buy to European suppliers and therefore use the Standard EN 10204 requirements for Certification of Material/Equipment.

Now we are involved in a Project in North America, so European Standards are not required. The material/Equipment shall comply with ASME Material Certification requirements.

As far as I understood, there are two types of Certificates:

Certified Material and Test Reports, to be provided for Pressure Retaining material and materials welded thereto (with some exceptions for smaller sizes). They shall include: material identification, actual results of all required chemical analyses, tests and examinations, and heat or lot traceability with the material.

Certificate of Compliance. Is shall include compliance with material specification, grade, class, and heat treated condition, as applicable.

I understand the results of all required chemical analyses, tests and examinations for the MTRs included in the Certificate shall correspond to the purchased heat / lot. But it is not explicitly stated in ASME.

I mean, the Certified Material and Test Reports are similar to 3.1 EN10204 Material Certificate and the Certificate of Compliance is similar to 2.1 EN10204 Material Certificate.

What do you think about / What is your understunding about this matter?

My understanding of the matter is you need to follow the material specification requirements for product form and material. This means if the material specification or reference to General Requirements state an MTR is required, it shall be required for acceptance of the material. If no MTR is required, acceptance of the material is based on the supplier stating that the material meets the specific and general requirements of the product specification. I know this can be confusing but there is no ASTM police, and the buyer needs to be aware that the material being purchased meets the specification requirements.

I agree with you. But my doubt is if when MTR is required, the provided test results must be from thet same heat/lot you are purchasing (like 3.1 EN10204) or if the provided test results could be from other heat/lot but of the same material produced in the same way (like 2.2 EN 10204).

Usually for ASME B&PV application, the MTR relates to the heat/lot of material being purchased.
