ASME SA-403 Pipe Caps

Greetings,
I want to make sure that I am correct regarding the WPS designation for SA-403 pipe caps.

I was told by a colleague that in order to be considered WPS, the pipe cap not only needed to be seamless, but also needed to be formed in a precision mold.

I read the ASME SA-403/SA-403M Specification and believe that the WPS designation is appropriate simply by virtue of the cap being formed from a seamless plate and meeting the other requirements in the Specification.

Is that the correct understanding?

I don't have the SA-403 spec at hand. All I can say is that the term "WP" means that the cap should be manufactured in conformance with ASME B16.9, including all dimensional requirements. See paragraph 4.4.1 of ASME B16.9

I read that it is dependent upon agreement between the manufacturer and purchaser.....

From the B16.9 2003.....

5 MATERIAL
Wrought fittings covered by this Standard shall be in
accordance with ASTM A 234, A 403, A 420, A 815, B
361, B 363, B 366, or the corresponding standard listed
in Section II of the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel
Code. The term wrought denotes fittings made of pipe,
tubing, plate, or forgings. Fittings made from block forgings
may only be supplied subject to agreement between
the manufacturer and purchaser. Such fittings need not
meet the requirements of para. 7.

7 SURFACE CONTOURS
Where adjacent openings in fittings are not in parallel
planes, they shall be joined by a circular arc or radius
on the external surfaces. The arc or radius may be terminated
in tangents. Except as provided for block forgings
(see para. 5), the projected profile of external surfaces
of fittings shall not have sharp intersections (corners)
and/or collapsed arcs.

I highly suggest obtaining the B16.9 standard..
