Hello All,

This is regarding the Non-Mandatory App-A, Figure A-2 (Tube-to-Tubesheet Welds) in ASME Sec VIII Div 1 (2019 Ed.).

Could someone share some knowledge on when the Fig. A-2(b),(h),(i) are used. More specifically, I am curious about why the grooves are provided around the welds ? Image below for quick reference. Any other crucial points related to other welds [(a),(c) etc.] are welcomed.

Thank you!

I have no practical experience, but I think b) is for minimizing stress risers (thus improving fatigue resistence), and h) and i) allow for equal weld thickness (but heat distribution), which may be required for certain alloys to prevent all sorts of welding issues.

I have seen them used in equipment that gets heavily thermal cycled.
I have also seen versions of h and i that were autogenous with no filler metal added.
