Hi everyone,

ASME Sect. VIII Div. 2, Para. AS-130(a) says nameplate shall be attached to the vessel. Does vessel mean Pressure Boundary or nameplate can be attached to the skirt also?

My problem is with a heavy wall reactor with operating temperature 815F. Nameplate bracket attached directly to pressure boundary gets extremely hot and is dangerous and it also can create local effects, like local stresses in the shell.

Any idea and advise are welcome.

Question (1): Is it the intent of AS-130(a) in Section III, Division 2 to allow the attachment of the nameplate to a pad, bracket, or structure which is welded directly to the vessel, provided the nameplate is located within 30 in. of the vessel?

The nameplate is intended to be an identifying component of a pressure vessel, which can be accessed from the ground or a platform safely. Is not intended to bring additional stresses to the equipment. That allows to include the skirt of a reactor as potential nameplate location, but common sense should also prevail, I mean you wouldn't attach the nameplate inside the skirt. If is not practical to place the namplate within 750 mm of the weld of skirt to shell, then use your common sense again and locate the nameplate for easy access, say near the skirt inspection opening, at about 5 ft high, ie eye level or so. You need obviously to obtain the Client's approval for location and to inform your AI.

The current location of the name plate (on the drawing) is close to the skirt opening (of course outside). But AUTORIZED INSPECTOR has put such a comment on the location of the name plate. 750 mm from the skirt to head junction is still in the area of the hot/CrMo zone and I do not want to jeopardize the thermal/stress analysis of that area, and there is no access platform at that level also. Considering these limitation, is this really a deviation from the code if we don’t move the name plate up? Othervise I have to think about two name plates.

750 mm from the weld is DOWN on the skirt, not up on the reactor shell! The nameplate bracket is welded on the skirt, not on the shell! Again, the intent of the Code is to have a permanent location for the nameplate, instead of placing it on a removable, bolted component like a manway cover, from which it could get lost. Hence, locating the nameplate on the skirt is not a deviation from the Code.
However, if the AI gets crancky, attach the nameplate close on the shell, cover it with insulation and affix a dummy nameplate on the insulation cladding, right above the real nameplate. Mark the location of the dummy with some bright colour, perhaps a note that the actual nameplate is located underneat the insulation. Don't speak to the AI ever again and ignore him when you both are shopping in the town.

I also meant 750 mm down on the skirt. Upper part of the skirt is CrMo and very Hot (There is hot box from inside at that level). Your advise is great. We keep the current nameplate on bottom portion of skirt and put a duplicate one some where on pressure boundary and cover it with insulation with a sign as you mentioned.
