I am working on a pressure vessel constructed in 1964 to ASME Section VIII code. I am looking for the allowable stress for SA240-316L at 200F. I know that the pre-1999 allowable stress is 16,700 psi but I am hoping to find a higher stress at a year closer to 1964. Any information on SA240-316L allowable stresses for 1964 or on where I can purchase older (pre 1999) copies of ASME Section VIII code would be appreciated.

AlainaR,

I have the '62 Code and from the Summer 1964 Addenda (Issued 30-June-64), Table UHA-23 S = 17,500 psi @ 200F (SA240-316L)which is covered by Note 1. There is the lower S value of 16,250 psi.
Note 1 states: "Due to the relatively low yield strength of this material, the higher stress values at temperatures from 200 through 1050F were established to permit the use of this material where slightly greater deformation is acceptable. The stress values within this range exceed 62-1/2%, but do not exceed 90% of the yield strength at temperature. These stress values are not recommended for the design of flanges or piping."

These values are the same in UHA-23 prior to the various Addenda being issued. They are also the same in the 1968 Code.

IHS Markit is where I purchase older code editions but there are probably other outlets.

Hopefully this helps.

Same in the 1965 edition as well. The national board can also provide scans of older code editions.

Thank you so much for your help.

The 17,500 psi value was what I was looking for.

I tried getting in contact with the NBBI for older versions of the code but could not get anyone to answer the phone (i.e. only voicemails).

IHS market was very helpful and have copies of the 1965 and 1968 code in stock so I will probably order from them.
