Please forgive my lack of ASME code knowledge in this question, Does ASME Sect VIII div 2 recommend the use of Von Mises stress plots to evaluate fatigue life? From some casual reading on-line I get the impression it does, Intuitively I would expect a principal stress plot to be a more accurate FE plot to use for fatigue life evaluation since it better highlights the more detrimental tensile stresses and dismisses the more beneficial compressive stresses. Looking for some feedback here with a possible code section reference that I could further read to understand this topic.
