Which is the correct standard to use for specifying buttwelding return type piping components(180 deg elbows)? ASME lists 2 standards as far as i can see:

ASME B16.28 - wrought steel buttwelding short radius elbows and returns

ASME B16.9 - factory made wrought buttwelding fittings (std. lists both short and long radius returns).

They can't both be valid can they ?

Well ... yes, but not for the same items. All current ASME specs are valid when applied to exactly what each corresponding title describes.

B 16.9 - Factory made wrought steel but welding fittings.
B 16.28 ASME B16.28 - wrought steel buttwelding short radius elbows and returns

**************** and there are more ************************

ASME 16.5 Steel pipe flanges & flanged fittings.
ASME B.36.10 Welded and Seamless wrought steel pipe.
ASME B.36.19 Stainless steel pipe.
ASME B.16.11 Forged steel fittings, socket welding & threaded.
ASME B.16.25 But welding ends.
ASME B.16.36 Steel orifice flanges
ASME B.16.47 Large diameter steel flanges.
