Dear Experts,
ASME VIII-1 requires the bolt load design to meet the requirement ASME PCC-1 Appendix O.
UG-44(b)(2) The actual assembly bolt load (see Nonmandatory Appendix S) shall comply with ASME PCC-1, Nonmandatory Appendix O.
PCC-1 is the reference standard in ASME VIII-1, Table U-3
NONMANDATORY APPENDIX S DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS FOR BOLTED FLANGE CONNECTIONS.
PCC-1 Appendix O is without considering m & y of gasket factors and does not provide Sgmin-o and Sgmin-s. How to determine Sgmin-o and Sgmin-s becames important. Since the design shall consider PCC-1 Appendix O that required by code, Sgmin-o and Sgmin-s will become the design condition, why does not PCC-1 or ASME Appendix-2 provide the recommend Sgmin-o and Sgmin-s? Currently Sgmin-o and Sgmin-s may be from API 660 Table-3 for heat exchanger girth flange design. I think that if the same type of flange and gasket, whatever it is girth flange or pipe flange the design philosophy shall be same. However, API 660 table 3 gives the same Sgmin-o and Sgmin-s whatever spiral wound, grooved metal with soft facing and corrugated with soft facing gaskets. That makes the gasket advantage improved by research and effort meaningless.
Welcome your opinion and input.
