Hello,

I am reading a comparison of different standards. ASME VIII Division 1 gives more strength, Devision 2 has not the same calculations as EN13445 or PD 5500, but gets the same results. But how do I know which division I shall use when a customer asks me to work according to ASME ?

First, you will need to understand the jurisdiction that they are operating in. There may be additional life-cycle considerations for VIII-2 vs VIII-1.

However, if your customer is asking for a vessel to "ASME", ask them that if you provide them one to VIII-2, are they able to provide a UDS. When they can't/won't provide that to you, then you can (rightly) conclude that:
a) They don't know what they're doing
b) They likely want a vessel to VIII-1

Have fun with that!

Thank you TGS4,

as I understood, it is important to write it down in the contract which division we are using.
Hope we will have fun

Simply put, div-1 is design by rule and div-2 is design by analysis. There are several other factors that differentaite the two, but this is one of the major difference.

The below link should be useful for a quick understanding between the two divisions.

Rakuday - you are incorrect in your simplification. VIII-2 has extensive design-by-rules, and is considered more complete in that sense than VIII-1. True, there are provisions (and explicit rules) in VIII-2 for design-by-analysis. But that does not make VIII-2 a DBA Code.

Hello TGS4,

what is a DBA code?

Silje,

DBA (Design By Analysis), finite element analysis for example.

Marty
