Hi everyone,

Quick doubt: The calculation of ASME B16.11 threaded couplings for ASME VIII-1 vessel is mandatory and should be treated as seamless pipe, including corrosion and thread tolerance, but UG-45 is not applicable as there is no "nozzle neck," is this correct?

Thanks in advance

"Question: Are threaded couplings welded directly to a pressure vessel to be designed per ANSI B16.11 as stated in UG-11, footnote 5, Section VIII, Division 1, thus disregarding the requirements of UG-45 for nozzle neck thicknesses, since no neck exists?

Reply: Yes."

Thank you very much Christine!

1) Interpretation VIII-1-83-217 date 02-22-1984 is obsolete : footnote 5 does not exist in Code 2023

2) See UW-16
(f) Standard Fittings: ASME/ANSI or Manufacturer’s Standard
(-3) the attachment weld throat shall be the greater of the following:
(+a) the minimum nozzle neck thickness required by UG-45 for the same nominal size connection

(g) Bolting Pads: Manufacturer’s Standard
-c) The attachment weld throat shall be the greatest of the following: (-1) the minimum nozzle neck thickness required by UG-45 for the same nominal size connection

3) Take a look in other section of VIII Div 1 and 2 with the term “NECK”.

Regards

Note that the basis for establishing Table UW-16.1 for minimum thickness requirements of nozzles which welded in accordance with UW-16(f)(3) is: B16.11 # 3000 Coupling O.D – O.D of pipe per B36.10 divided by 2.

For example: NPS 1"
Per B16.11 Table I-5: # 3000 Coupling O.D=1.75"
Per B36.10 Table 2-1: NPS 1 O.D=1.315"
(1.75-1.315)/2=0.22"

If you are welding in accordance with UW-16(f)(3), just make sure that the nozzle thickness met the required thickness per Table UW-16.1.

ASME Section VIII Division 1, 2023 Edition paragraph UW-16(f)(3)(-a)(6):

"In lieu of the thickness requirements in UG-45, the minimum wall thickness for fittings shall not be less than that shown in Table UW-16.1 plus the thickness added for corrosion allowance."

This would apply to fittings 3" NPS and below that meet all of the other stipulations of UW-16(f)(3)(-a).

Good morning,

In the initial post I forgot to write that I meant a coupling welded with a full penetration weld.

Thank you for all answers
