Hi,

I'm just trying to get my head around traceability requirements for bolting on a code vessel. Let's say you are built a 2013 edition vessel and you have bolting that has a CMTR that complies with the SA-193 2007 edition.

UG-12 provides guidelines regarding acceptable bolting. SA-193 is acceptable.

Is it correct that the bolting is a pressure retaining component and it would need to follow UG-93?

If so, section II Part A appendix II, II-200(b) allows for the 2007 edition to be used in 2013 edition construction.

Do you still need to verify the chemical / mechanical / heat treatment requirements on the CMTR? If so, is that a code requirement or good practice? Please provide code reference if applicable.

As a fabricator, Review & Approval of all MTR are a requirement that you must adress and control into your ASME QCM.
So that is not just a good practice, it's an obligation. :)
All MTR must be reviewed & approved as per latest code edition.

Thanks for the reply. Do you have a code reference I can look up? The only reference that I know that requires evaluation of a MTR or CMTR is UG-10 but it wouldn't be applicable here since the material is acceptable for code use.

Hi Mechanimal,

UG-93 should answer all your traceability questions.

Have a nice day!

Thanks for the reply Turbo77, would it be correct to assume the statement in UG-93(a) "...in complete compliance with a material specification of section II..." would require verification of the MTR to the product specification to ensure it is in compliance with the specification or would the fact that the MTR references an acceptable ASME material within the code years of acceptable ASTM specifications per Section II II-200(b) be enough proof that it is complete compliance with the material specification?

Turbo, some have ordrs taht still falls and built to the ASME 2010 Edition.
Mechanimal. Materials get old. It shall be verified the MTR data in compliance to the edition Yr.n Add. You are fabricating to. Not just assuming the materialis in compliance. Astm material is acceptable if chemicals meet ASME specification.

Well I did find a reference interpretation for standard pressure parts unfortunately studs aren't in there. Apparently CMTRs are not required for flanges, B16.9 fittings, B16.11 fittings, and pipe! If I could only find the requirement for studs!!! Any comments on the below interpretation?

"Interpretation: VIII-78-52
Subject: Section VIII, Division 1, UG-93 and UG-11
Date Issued: April 21, 1978
File: BC78-97

Question: Is it correct to interpret that identification requirements for acceptance of material are met by UG-11(c)(1) and UG-93(a)(2) in reference to welded standard pressure parts, such as flanges, pipe, and pipe caps, and that Material Test Reports or Certificates of Compliance are not required for such parts?

Reply: Yes.
