ASME VIII UG-22 Clarity for a Engineering Intern

Hi everyone,

My mentor is currently on vacation and has assignmend a task of looking at some past calcuations he has compelted to get familiar with Engineering Codes and Standards.

I am currently looking at calcuations he has completed for detemining the minimum thickness of tanks using ASME VIII UG-27. When looking through all the factors to be considered in the Code, I don't see the weight of the water inside the tank considered in my mentor's calculations. I would think it needs to be considered as per UG-22 (b) weight of the vessel and normal contents under operating or test conditions;

Am I interepreting something wrong?

Nope, you are spot on. Suggest you have a look @ non-mandatory appendix L-2.1.

I would think that is because, the design is done with respect to a given pressure (design pressure).
That pressure (considerably higher than the operating pressure) caters for the weight of the liquid.
The weight of the liquid (water) over a given area , results in PRESSURE exerted on the vessel by the fluid.
