I am interested in taking a look at ASME Y14.5.1, but I've seen others on here saying it is not quite useful. I would like to attempt to ask management to purchase it, as I have a degree in mathematics and it may assist me with CMM programming. Can anyone here tell me the extent of the math that they use? Is it mostly advanced geometry or do they take it further? It seems like its very short (~30 pgs)...

I read here, on this forum, that a much improved revision of the math standard is to be released soon. Save yourself a couple of bucks and wait until then. This new version of the math standard will be in a direct support of Y14.5-2009, as far as I understood.

It is mostly a set of logical arguments based on vector operations. It's one of those documents that if you understand it, you don't need it and if you don't understand it, it probably won't help much. If you are creating a CMM software suite it would be useful as a checklist as a software requirements document, saving time writing your own. I found no particular insights, but it does have examples of symmetry that don't seem to be covered by profile or position no matter how they are twisted.

Search with Google. Somewhere on second or third page you will find a copy. It would be illegal, but since you only want to take a quick pick before buying actual one, there will be little harm.

Good luck!

If I had a dollar for every spec that I've bought that turned out to be completely useless, Id have about $20.
