I am designing facilities for transporting asphalt (540 cst@150 degC) by train car in a facility in Northern Alberta, Canada.
Can somebody please tell me the procedures for the same and any special requirements?
Thanks in anticipation.

I'm not sure exactly what your scope is when you say "facilities." Some of the racks and loading arms at our asphalt plant were provided by Carbis. You might find that it will be cost effective to buy a semi off the shelf unit from them.

Are you going to be shipping ashphalt, or receiving it??

How will you heat the tanks, if shipping, and how will you heat the cars if receiving??

How will you heat (trace) the lines between the cars and the tanks??

hi rmw:

The facilities are for shipping asphalt.

By facilities, I mean tanks, piping to the loading arms and the loading arms themselves. The piping will be steam traced. The cars will be heated up at the customer end prior to unloading.

There were some concerns about static generation (that sets a limit on our loading rate) and emissions while loading. Can you please throw some light on that?

Thanks.

Raj

I remember a discussion about static generation, and I think it was on this site. You might do a search on several keywords.

I will have to think about the emissions question, but I have seen asphalt tanks manifolded toghether to a coalescing filter, with a fan drawing the vapors through it.

I will try to come up with a reference.

Hi rmw:

While loading the rail cars, are the emissions from the cars also collected or do they have some sort of blanketing system. I did a thorough check on the internet but was unable to come up with anything useful.
Are there any standards which define the limit at which emisssions can be vented to atmosphere or when they have to go to a close system?

Thanks and regards.

Hi Raj
Have u already design the system?
If not then I want to know some thing about your facilities.
1. What is the carrying capacity of individual car?
2.Why u have chosen 150 deg. c?
3.Steam tracing is good proposition but at the same time u can think for electric coil heating arrangement also
