assembly drawing question 1

alright i have an assembly
i have 4 parts in the assembly
in one of my views i want to only show 3 of the 4 parts
how do i go about doing this
im on ug nx
i thought the old way was to expand the view and blank the component u dont want shown. i tried this and it worked but
it also blanked it from all my other views which wont work for me.

Here is my suggestion. Move the part that you only want in certain views to its own layer. Either move the whole component or just the solid. Then in drafting use Format>Visable In View. Pick the view(s) in question and pick only the layers that you want to be seen in the view(s).

I agree with rossly's approach. Alternatively, you could do a view dependent edit, erase objects, type - solid body.

As you become more familiar with UG, you will find that there are usually several ways to accomplish the same thing (which can be good or bad, depending on your viewpoint).

Thjere is another way that is easier and doesn't ness you up like Visible-In-View.

Use Exploded Assemblies and Hide Component in the view. Even though it says Exploded Assemblies, you don't have to expolde anything, just hide the component.

How will using Visible-In-View mess you up, other than having to regenerate the view? I admit I don't use that method, and prefer to segregate by layer (for more reasons than view visibility), but it would be good to know of the pitfalls. Thanks!

Try resetting it. It is a one-way street. Once activated, you can NEVER get back to the original default condition. The best you can do is turn on all layers for the view(s). We have many a user call and complain that they can't do something on a drawing view and the first thing I check is V-I-V settings and then make all layers active.

This isn't new. I and others have been complaining to McD, EDS, UGS, and EDS PLM about the lack of a reset command for V-I-V for a long time.

The lack of data visable in V-I-V is an issue. looslib, I will try the Hide Component, that sounds that it would be a good method for our assembly drawings.

I agree with Ben. I have been using that method with hide and show components ever since it was an option. It works great and is simple to use. We used to use visible in view but just too much of layer control and labeling layers etc.

Hide component sounds like the way to go for drawings. The V-I-V issue aside, catagorizing your layers is still a good idea, and only requires minimum effort.

I received a couple of fairly complex tooling fixture files this week from one of our vendors; over fifty layers in each, all visible with both assembled fixture and exploded assembly, with no layer catagories. A little foresight on his part would have saved me valuable time differentiating the assemble parts from the exploded parts.

IMO layer control is an important and effective modeling tool. Company modeling standards and a little discipline can go a long way to improving efficiency.

this is what i did and it worked great
i went to assemblies-exploded views
and it lets me select the component in the assembly that i want to take out but still leave it in the other views
and i can create detail views of the seperated parts
