Hi
Can any one explain how to increase performance for the assembly ?.I have a top level assembly & few say 10 sub assemblies. In tools->option->performance ive enabled the 'Automatically load components lightweight' & resolve lightweight component to 'ALWAYS'. Then when i opened the top level assembly I found that all the sub-assemblies are in resolved state. But the parts in sub-assembly are still in lightweight..Also If all my top level & sub-assemblies are in lightweight, iam not able to select the sub-assemblies planes for an new sub-assembly for mating. All i see is the part doc & not any assembly planes in lightweight sub-assembly component.

What version of SolidWorks and what service pack are you running?

What operating sytem are you using?

What video card and video card driver are you using?

What is the speed and make of your system processor and how much memory are you working with?

Hi MadMango
Iam using SW2004 ServicePack1
O/S- Win 2000 pro
Matrox G450 32 MB
PIII 1ghz dual processor with 512 MB ram

It seems to me that you are pushing the performance envelope with the computer system you have. I'm sure it was a nice system 2 years ago. Try to get some more memory, this will increase performance (512mb just won't cut it anymore).

Ensure that you are running the 5.82.018 drivers for your Matrox card.

Try to log into SolidWorks website, and look at Best Practices in the Implementation Guide. Some things to look at are:

In System Options>Display/Selection-
Part/Assembly Tangent Edge Display= Removed
Edges Displayed in Shaded Mode= No Edges

In System Options>Performance-
Enable Automatically load parts Lightweight (you said you have this one).

In System Options>Large Assembly Mode-
Change your large assembly threshold to some lower value.
Enble Automatically load parts Lightweight (You might have missed this one).
Disable Hide all planes, axes, sketches, curves, annotations, etc (This might be causing your problem of not seeing planes in the assembly for mating).

If you click the help on the large assembly mode it will tell you what options to choose for optimal Performance.

How large of an assembly are you working with? 10 sub-assemlbies doesn't say much because we don't know how many parts are in those subs.

I agree with MadMango, your probably maxing out everything about your system. Watch your Task manager to see how much RAM your using. I bet your using all the memory. I wouldn't recommend anything under 1 gig with SW04 and working with large assembly.

Clean your Temps out.

Get the Drivers SW recommends for your Video card. Or get a new card.

Work locally.

Check HDD space.

Don't use those little crappy programs that do little stupid things - Example: Weather bug - Shut that stuff off.

Your dual processors are not doing anything for you with SW. Check with recent threads on the subject for more detail.

Next. Correct me if I am wrong, Scott, but if you load anything lightweight, all you really get is topographical data for display plus mate data, etc. So if you want to interogate a part of assembly to feature level )select a plane, etc.) you have to resolve that part.

Hi madmango
ive missed out some thing .What ever said regarding in the option ive already set it
In System Options>Display/Selection-
Part/Assembly Tangent Edge Display= Removed
Edges Displayed in Shaded Mode= No Edges

In System Options>Performance-
Enable Automatically load parts Lightweight (you said you have this one).

In System Options>Large Assembly Mode-
Change your large assembly threshold to some lower value.
Enble Automatically load parts Lightweight (You might have missed this one).
Disable Hide all planes, axes, sketches, curves, annotations, etc (This might be causing your problem of not seeing planes in the assembly for mating).
apart from the above ive enabled resolve lightweight component to 'ALWAYS'
when ever i open an assembly the SW first it open in lightweight mode & then it should solve the lightweight to resolved as ive made the resolve lightweight component to 'ALWAYS'.
All i need is to insert an assembly in a top level assembly which is opened in lightweight with mates respect to the planes in the subassembly.but the planes in subassembly dosent show the planes as all my subassemblies are also in lightweight. IS there any other option to insert an assembly w.r.t subassembly planes without resolving the sub-assembly.

Next. Correct me if I am wrong, Scott, but if you load anything lightweight, all you really get is topographical data for display plus mate data, etc. So if you want to interogate a part of assembly to feature level )select a plane, etc.) you have to resolve that part.

Yes, if you want to make a change to a part you will need to resolve it. But if your looking to regain some speed of the assembly. Then I would load it lightweight and only resolve the parts on a needed basis.

Bingo, Scott - that's what I meant really. I should have been more specific. Need basis for individual parts only for resolving!!!

Never tried this, but do you get the RAM back if you reload them lightwiehgt once you have finished messing with them?

hi slee,
i don't know this will solve ur problem or not , but try this in ASSEMBLY ONLY...

have u enabled tools-options-performance- verification on rebuild? if u enabled , deselect it.
now check ur assm performance.
thanks,

HI guy thanks a lot for the info .this really helped me a lot.
Also one more thing is that ive have a top level assembly & several sub assemblies init. my first sub assembly has only planes & 3Dsketches .Now all my subassemblies are in lightweight. Now i wanna use these planes in sub assembly which is in lightweight to be used for adding mates to other assemblies without resolving it .
