Hi,

Is the proof loading test always required for nuts?
Should be stipulated in the order as a requirement??

Yes, proof load testing is a requirement for nuts purchased according to ASTM A194. See section 7.2.

Than you for your answer, but I read in § 7.2, that the proof loading test is an option and should be indicated in the purchase order , if we want that it shall be performed. Is it correct? It seems that suppliers do not perform the test if it is not added in order !

I initially looked at an older version of ASTM A194. The latest version shows the requirements for Proof Load Testing in section 8.2. Here is an excerpt:

8.2 Proof Load Test:
8.2.1 Requirements—All nuts shall be capable of withstanding the proof loads specified in Table 3 and Table 4. However,
nuts manufactured to dimensions and configurations other than those covered by ANSI B 1.1, ANSI B 1.13M, ANSI B 18.2.2,
and B 18.2.4.6M are not subject to the proof load test.

8.2.2.1 helps a little further. Basically for hex, heavy hex and jam nuts, proof load testing would be required for those with a proof load of 160,000 lb. For those with proof loads higher than 160,000 lb, you could stipulate Supplemental S4 requirement if you want the proof load tested.
