Hi

Is it possible to perform ASTM A262 Practice E on dissimilar metals(SS304L Butt welded to Carbon steel).

What do you guys think about it.

Personally i do not think so it is feasible to perform this test on dissimilar metals joined by welding.

Yes you can do the test, and it should fail. With the Fe and C picked up from weld dilution you would never expect it to pass.
And what does it matter, as long as the weld is as good as the CS then it is fine.

thanks for sharing your views.

What i understood from your reply is that this joint is not feasible and will give us sensitization problem?

What about Practice A? will samples show sensitization in the weld metal and HAZ area?

Yes it is possible.

Not necessary.

For Practice A it can be done to evaluate the degree of sensitization in the 304L HAZ.

You can do a micro and etch, it will show how much sensitization you have.
The weld metal will be sensitized, unless you have so much dilution from the CS that it isn't austenitic at all.
Depending on the filler your 304L HAZ should not show any sensitization except for right along the weld.
