Hello,
AS we know that ASTM A300 Class 1 has been obsoleted standard, one of our heat exchanger was fabricated using ASTM A300 Class 1. What is other alternate material of this standard, can I use ASTM A516 Gr 70 now?

ASTM A 300 is titled "Notch Toughness Requirements for Normalized Steel Plates". This material specification provides requirements for impact testing for low temperature service. The Class 1 designation only applies to A 516 steels, all grades, with a minimum impact test temperature of -50 deg F. Minimum impact requirement is 15 ft-lbs.

So, yes, you can use SA 516 Grade 70 material but you need to specify heat treatment and require impact testing for Class 1.

Dear metengr

Thanks, for the same scenario,Can we use ASTM A537 Class 2 as an alternate of A300 Class 1. We basically use this exchanger for LPG service and thickness of shell is 10mm with minimum allowable temperature of 15 centigrade.

For ASTM A516 gr 70 what exact type of heat treatment is required to use as an alternate material of A300 Class 1?

Again, you need to have a pressure vessel firm review your material consideration and have it in writing as a basis for selection. This is not something you do over the internet.

For SA 516 Gr 70, the heat treatment specified should be a normalization heat treatment following SA 516.
