ASTM A572 is used for plate material as well as S Sections. Is it use for W Sections, too? Thanks,

AISC's Are You Properly Specifying Materials article is the best source I know for identifying the specifications used for different steel shapes short of contacting a fabricator. It looks like A572 is a common specification for HP-shapes and plates, but it says you need to check with a fabricator for W or S shapes. This fabricator suggests that a dual certification is possible for W-shapes at least for A572 Grade 50 since it is very similar to the standard A992, but there's a chance you may be limiting your options by specifying it.

Thanks... The project I'm looking at, the consultant has spec'd ASTM A572 for rolled sections, not stipulating a grade. I've only been able to find reference to it for plates and S Sections... The sections used are W and C sections. For plate, BAR and C and L, the consultant specs G40.21-300W (common 44 grade Canadian steel). It's just a little confusing. I think I'll ask the EOR to confirm the use of G40.21-350W for rolled sections (not incl C and L). A572 is not common, but it is available. Thanks for the link...

If it's a CISC project, I have seen these grades as more familiar U.N.O
WF or S-350W
HSS-350 CLASS C OR CLASS H
ANGLE, PLATES, AND CHANNELS - 300W
ANCHOR RODS - A307 OR 300W

If the consultant specifies any ASTM material, I would like to make sure, do we really need to use this grade? most of the time they will switch to CISC materials

"ASTM A992 is also known as “ASTM A572 grade 50 with special requirements per AISC Technical Bulletin #3, dated March 1997” and is only applicable to wide-flange shapes."

Thanks very much Veer... that's what I usually spec, with BAR at 300W. I almost never use HSS Class H. Occasionally use Type T for low temperature conditions. Not familiar with the ASTM specs for steel other than a 'little bit'; I'm pretty sure the consultant mis-spec'd the steel, but wasn't familiar with the steel specs to know it. The material spec'd comes in higher grades, too (grade also missed).

Thanks Skeletron... good info. I'm pretty much up on Canadian steels; this ASTM threw me a bit of a curve due to my lack of familiarity.
