I'm reviewing for the structural PE test and came across this User Note (in grey box):
AISC_360_F-2_Note_mmltdq.jpg

It is referencing ASTM A6 steel but does this note also cover A992 steel?

Any help/references/resources you have would be appreciated

Thanks!

I think A6 designates the shapes. A992 would designate the steel type and the yield strength. Compactness would be based on Fy in any case, regardless of specific steel type.

I don’t have the last few Eds. of these Specs. and Stds. any longer, so I’m not sure what changes have been made lately. You can Google both of those stds. and read them, to see what they have to say. ASTM A6 is a general std. which covers most rolled structural steel; manufacturing and purchasing tolerances, quality requirements, etc. etc. It is sorta the prefix std. to all of the more specific material stds. A992 is a more specific material spec. which covers min mech. properties, strength, chemical make-up, etc. for a group of material strengths and grades.
