If charpy impact test is performed per ASTM A923 Method B for duplex stainless steel, should the supplementary essential variables be treated as essential variables for the WPS per ASME IX? Such as QW-403.6 limit on minimum qualified base metal thickness for GTA and SMAW will become essential variable.

Thanks for your valuable advice.

Since the A923 test is not a test for toughness it would be your call based on your expectations of whether performance would degrade should the WPS be extended to the allowable thicknesses. A lot of end users cut the confusion by demanding the A923 Charpy energy requirement for an actual toughness test thus invoking the tighter thickness limits.

Thanks Steve for the reply. Is there anyway to identify this from PQR charpy test to show if this is actual toughness test or just for A923 Charpy energy requirement.

Appreciate your input on this.

The A923 test is on a single test piece only, whereas the toughness testing will be on a set of three test pieces from each test location.
