I use CEI Prowrite ASME pressure vessel design software. I am trying to design a tube per ASME B16.8 using API 5L X65 pipe and A694 F65 flanges. But the materials are not in the software. I looking for either Any help.

Hawkeye003, I'm having trouble making sense of your post.

A tube? Flanges? ASME B16.8 covers what, exactly? API pipe is not generally a recognized material per ASME pressure Codes. Nor is A694 F65, apparently. Materials recognized by ASME pressure Codes are usually designated SA-xxx for ferrous materials, SB-xxx non-ferrous. Refer to ASME Sec II Part D if you have it.

I'd say you need some training or mentoring from Prowrite or elsewhere.

Regards,

Mike

The problem with sloppy work is that the supply FAR EXCEEDS the demand

This may be because ASME B 16.8 doesn't appear to exist....

This is a list / brochure of all ASME B 16 standards
In general ASME boiler codes and things like B 31.3 don't give the API pipeline pipe any credit for it's increased yield strength.

Even ASME B 16.5 flanges doesn't recognise A694 material! You need to use the MSS series of specs to use those flanges.

Thank you for your assistance. Looks to me that ASME need to catch up with the newer materials available in the market.

Hawkeye003, ASME pressure Codes have provisions for admission of new materials. You only need follow them.

The materials you have chosen are primarily used in pipeline construction and also used (less so)in ASME B31.3 Process piping applications. Why would you use your computer system for ASME Section VIII design on a piping system?

The materials are per the customer request. We are a Venturi manufacturer and use ASME codes for design. But the customer wants it made to ASME B31.8 specifications, which is a piping spec.

No it's not, ASME B 31.8 is a Gas pipeline transmission specification.

ASME B 31.3 is a process piping specification, but that includes API 5L pipe.

If this is external boiler piping why are you designing it to a pressure vessel code??

API 5L has been around for nearly a century. There must be something the ASME VIII guys don't like about it...

If the API grades were in ASME they would have lower pressure ratings, just different rules.

I agree. After reading other threads, it seems ASME does not like the lack of stress information above 400 deg.f. We use the ASME pressure vessel program for liability issues, and inspection of the venturi tubes and piping systems we manufacture meet B31.1 or B31.3 codes. I have not found any design software for API type vessels.

I thought that this is an issue to your Customer to determine if the meter proposal to be made by B31.3 is acceptable for using in the flow meter station on the pipeline system.
