Hi everybody! I need help to understand ASTM drawing logic. In our country, we use native draft standards which regulate how should drawing look like and what type of information it must contain. I don't understand how to define in ASTM drawings which material should be used to produce detail. In our native standard, we have a cell in the draft stamp. In this cell, engineer put information about the material, finish type of surface (for sheet material for example), size and etc. Now I have looked some ASTM drafts and they also contain a cell for material, but it looks like stainless steel 304. There is no information about the thickness of material and surface finish type. So I have questions. Where in ASTM drafts engineer should designate material properties (in format cell or in a text field)? And how to define that I needed a polish surface type for SS AISI 304? I read ASME Y14.24-2012, maybe I should learn other standards to understand these things?

It can be in the same cell or as a drawing note or on the field of the drawing; anywhere that a person reading the drawing can find it and be sure what it pertains to.
