I am looking for a way to remove mild steel from a nitronic 40 piece. The steel was used as a filler during a spraying process. From what I can gather, HCL may be a suitable solution. I have found that it should be less than 1% to not attack the notronic 40. Will that be strong enought to aggressively attack the steel?

Try using an acid which passivates stainless and dissolves carbon steel like hot, dilute HNO3. 5-10% and over 50C.

I ended up trying many things and, for my application, 33% Acetic acid above 80C worked the best. Believe it or not.

That's very interesting that acetic could do the job. I appreciate the feedback.
