If Atterberg limits are totally depandent on clay size particals, then why atterberg not used #200 sieve in astm D4318. As he use #40 sieve pass material

That's what was used when it was invented and changing these things is swimming against the river

The non-cohesive sand will interfere with the cohesive fines. The significance of the interference will of course vary between soils.

The plasticity only comes from the cohesive particles but total behavior includes retarding forces as well as driving forces.

Not a geotekkie, but I think that the Atterberg limits would largely be determined by the lower 25% of the fines in the soil sample. It may be some other percentage. Coarser material may reflect a reduction in shrinkage upon drying. By using the 40 sieve, it probably tries to accommodate at least part of this.

Rather than think climate change and the corona virus as science, think of it as the wrath of God. Do you feel any better?
