Can anyone help.
I have set up an attribute block in model space to enable me to have multiple views of one of the attributes in the block in paper space using viewports. I have saved it as a .dwt template so I can insert it from the layout tab into my dwgs, however the block in model space is not inserted this way therefore my template has got no attributes when inserted. Is they any other way of achieving this.
I am trying to create A1, A2, A3, and A4 border templates with all the dwg data entered using attributes where common data ie dwg no is only entered once.
Thanks

A few questions. What version of ACAD are you using (Mechanical, plain, etc..)? Are you trying to insert a block with attributes into modelspace while you are in paperspace(Layout)? Are you trying to have the attributes fill out automatically as the block is inserted?

Hi
AutoCAD 2000i
I am trying to create a template (border) that can be inserted into any dwg. I usually insert my borders by right clicking on the layout tab and choosing "from Template" then choosing the template I have created, but when I do this the attribute block which has been created in model space will not come in with the rest of the border (which is in Paper space). When inserting this way does Autocad only insert paper space objects?

"Wblock" your border and attributes. Go to your "insert" menu, and choose "block".

The reason why I want it as as .dwt apposed to a block is so it prompts "save as" so it cannot be altered. The reason the attribute block is in model space is because I have created multiple viewports in paper space to look at the same attribute a few times because my borders have got the "dwg no", "title", and "project" appearing 3 times on the border and also when they are down the right hand side of the dwg they are rotated 90 deg. A bit confusing I know. If the block is in paper space I would have to type in the "dwg no", "title", and "project" 3 times. maybe this is the only way. Any help appreciated. Thanks

AutoCAD treats inserts very uniquely for paperspace and modelspace (the two shall not meet). It may be different in ACAD2004 (I am not sure) but differing space objects cannot be input at once by inserting them. I won't question why you are doing what you are doing, but it may not happen like you want. Have you tried dragging things in through design center. Sometimes this accomplishes what some want. You may also try having a template file that has the attributed blocks you want and starting any new drawing with the template. The items would exist already in the drawing and you would then just insert locally instead from the network or harddrive. I hope I am making sense and are of some help.

Thats how I started all of this by having a template file with the attribute block, and I would start with the template like you say. But because the template has multiple entries of the same thing (ie the dwg no shows up 3 times on the template), I thought there would be an easier way of entering the same thing in more than once. Hence I put the attribute block of the template into model space and used viewports to locate the entrys. Borgunit, perhaps I could e-mail the template so you could see what I mean
Thank so much for your help

ccable,

if i understand what you are trying to do as basically the same thing that i am trying to accomplish.....one 'main' source for (text) data and multiple locations (viewports) of that same information, and propagation of changes (both directions)....

i think that the approach that i used may apply to how you are using your template;
1. in model space draw your block as you want it to appear.
2. in paper space, create multiple view ports wherever you want them to appear.
3. adjust each viewport accordingly
4. then lock each of the viewports

so, this leads me to the question for this forum that i have:

how do i place a titleblock in model space so that it can be seen throughout all views (A, B, D size paper) but then be either hidden or frozen in model space (so that i can draw and zoom with the block in the view).....

i am basically leaving it there (MS) now and using many viewports on the 3 layouts to represent the different parts of the titleblock that i want to view.......

any ideas ???

your titleblocks have no business in model space, they should all be in paperspace

chicopee is right. I have had so many problems just with those dang templates that I have left it alone. I just set up my first layout, fill out the title block (all the common attributes, then just copy the tabs on down the line. Hint: any time all the title block in the layouts need to change (again, just the common attributes) you can use the global attribute editor with express tools. Works like a champ for me.

Otherwise, if you insist on using a titleblock in model space, then simply stretch your viewport to cover the entire titleblock. Of course this will also encompass all your other viewports as well....which is why I agree with chicopee.

southern,

okay, titleblocks in each layout and removed from model (it looks better anyway), blocks are defined with attributes.....but when i try to globally change any block attribute value, it only changes it on the current layout....it doesn't find the other definitions, whatsupwithat ?

If you are sure you are using the Global Attribute Edit command from Express.....then beats me. Onlything I would check is make sure your titleblock is not a block within a block...i.e. did you copy and paste it into other layouts as a block? Explode one or two and see if that's the case. Otherwise it would seem your express tools need a reloading.
