We recently upgraded the operating system in our company to windows xp, and now the autocad system we use will no longer open drawings made by autocad 2000 or above. We work with outside sources and they do the drawings in their systems, save a copy in autocad 14 and email to us, and in the past we have been able to open and work with them, but now we get the error "Drawing file was created in an incompatible version". Has anyone had this problem and if so how was it corrected, short of upgrading to a new Autocad system?

The operating system should not and does not affect AutoCAD's ability to open drawings nor does it change the drawing file to a different version. You will have to look elsewhere for the problem. When you changed the OS, did you re-install AutoCAD? If so, is the installation identical, with all service packs, upgrades, 3rd aprty applicaitons, etc? If you open the R14 drawing in a newer version of AutoCAD it should say "opening a R14 drawing" or something like that, to confirm that the drawings are indeed R14. Try to open an old one that you can confrim is R14. Are you sure you only had R14???

Perhaps the operating system is not to blame, however, we are using R14, and it is as up to date as possible. We did a clean install, therefore everything had to be reloaded, and since that time one of our people spent a day on the web downloading everything that was for R14, and then we had an associate from another office save a 2000 cad drawing as R14, and email it to us. The R14 would only give us the error, even though we had the associate save it several times and email it to us. We also have the Volo viewer which opened the drawing but only the first page and it would not show the tabs at the bottom allowing us to look at more. Any help would be appreciated, but if we cannot get an answer soon, we will just have to upgrade. Thanks for the response.

I'm wondering if your email system is being trouble.

What happens if you create a drawing in R14, email it to your associate, have him/her save it as an R2000 with a new name, then save it as an R14 with another new name and email it back to you.

What happens if you don't use email, but use floppy or CD?

What happens if you zip the drawing and email the zip file.

You only get that prompt on versions created newer than the one that you are trying to open it with. Make them double check the file by opening it themselves and reading the version they are opening. We constantly have this issue. They think they are saving it down but they are not.

Agree with borgunit. I don't think they are saving it down. I've inadvertantly sent a file which I should have saved down. It happens.

i went to the sender and had him try to save it again, and this time it locked his machine up twice. I told him that i would use volo to open it, and i can open it but no tabs appear. he told me that the drawings were actually done by a 2004 version, sent to him as 2000, and he tried to send it to me as r14, so perhaps the individual with the 2004 version needs to save it as r14 and resend it. i have requested that and am waiting for it to happen.

thanks to all who have responded, you have been a great help.

autocadd 2004 does not allow you to save as r14

i use r14 almost exclusively. i am starting to have weird problems with drawngs from 2004. i have all three versions on my computer so i can work in them and then "translate them to r14"

i gess i will have to start using 2004 :-( !

R2005 skips R14 in the SaveAs dialog but does have an R12 DXF selection. Can you try that in R2004, then open the R12 DXF in your R14?
