Hello, the end of this year we will be updating to nx 8.0.3 and are looking forward to being able to open I-deas files directly into NX. Question is there a way to automate opening i-deas files and adding them to NX? We have a lot of legacy data in i-deas and would love to add them with the power drafting license to our NX data. Mid next year the next step for us it to add teamcenter into the mix. Would it be beneficial to convert these files prior to or after the teamcenter upgrade? Does anyone have any experience with this?

I'm no expert in this area but i think that If you would upgrade the I-deas TDM to Teamcenter, there is an automated tool called CMM that does the "whole thing", i.e both migrates the TDM structure over and converts the files. So my guess is that there isn't any benefit to do it manually in advance.
I have seen quite a number of NX parts that had been migrated from I-deas and my view is that the results is quite impressing. ( Siemens has been polishing the migration tools since NX3. )

Are the I-Deas files attached to 3D models? It would be better to do this after the teamcenter Upgrade. What we have experienced when we CMM parts from I-Deas into NX is that the models are "ok" 75-80 percent features coming over. The drawings are not coming over from the CMM over that good into NX. Probably a 50-60 percent success rate of fidelity checks.

The drawings in ideas are mostly 2D layouts. Not much in the solid model design. This is why I heard that either the power drafting or the drafting plus has a direct open of ideas drawing files and this may be the best method. Thanks for the info. Didn't know about CMM. More research to do. Has anyone used the drafting plus? Wondering how this compares to the 2D package in Ideas? Prior to working here I have experience in both Ideas and NX but both would require a 3d model and the drawing built from there. The fellas I work with do 90% of their work in 2D layouts and create drawings from this. The NX drafting package (at least in NX 6) is not as robust as I-deas. Hoping this upgrade will help the guys out that lean on the 2D.

The drafting plus is ok. This is me but I do not care for the NX drafting. We are using NX7.5 at this time. Maybe it is my lack of training in the NX 2D but I struggle with areas (trying to modify and or do curve manipulation brought in from I-Deas) as with I-Deas drafting it was very easy and more straight forward. But You can import directly I-Deas ASC drawings directly into NX. What I like about NX 2D is that you can constrain sketches in the 2d world, which in I-deas the curves you put in, you could not constrain.

NX can't open the drawing files(*.mdf) from I-deas TDM you must firs export them out of TDM as *.asc files.
Are you on maintenances for I-deas the you need to ask Siemens or your Reseller for the CMM tool.
This tool first import the TDM with all relations in to TeamCenter and after that you can do the CAD migration from I-deas to NX inside TeamCenter.
The CMM tool reads the *.mdf files directly
