I have a 3 in. thick welded test plate and am required to perform rounded transverse weld tensile specimens in accordance with B4.0. Per customer requirements and based on the thickness, there are two sets of multiple test specimens that need to be performed at two different locations. The largest diameter shown in Fig. 4.1, i.e. 0.500 in., shall be used per Par. 4.7.3. One set of multiple test specimens is required to test the full thickness of the plate at each location. Does the phrase "at various locations" when read in context in Par. 4.7.3.2 require to test specimens that are cut based on them being stacked vertically, one on top of each other, or to test specimens that are cut based on them being staggered vertically?

Do you have the tensile machine capability to test 4 rectangular tensiles that are 1-1/2" thick? You know cut out two 3" thick specimens, machine them up, and then cut those in half and finish machining where you saw cut? Might be easier than machining eight 505's.
Otherwise, the 505's would be stacked vertically, 4 & 4.
