Dear all,

Is there any chance of uniaxial load act on circular hollow section?

I have to design one circular column (document attached). I have selected the formula (attached) from aluminum design manual.

As per attached formula, I need to calculate Major principal axis and minor principal axis bending.

As Ixx & Iyy is equal in circular section, i am confused to take major and minor axis.

shall i take 0 in minor axis bending moment?

request all help me to solve this.

yes, if you have a round section, then the moment vector aligns with the principal direction, and then there is no other moment acting, so zero.

For what it's worth, examples 4 and 15 in the back of ADM 2010 address bending and compression of pipes

Sorry - Aluminum Design Manual from Aluminum Association - OP had included a page from it, but I should have been clearer.

In this case , “All Roads Lead to Rome”...

- You may choose bigger moment axis major and other is minor ,

- Or you may calculate the resultant moment Mr= SQRT( M1**2 +M2**2) and assume the major axis at Mr and Mmin is zero as pointed out by rb1957 (Aerospace)..
