Backlash from different gear types 1

Hey everyone,

I have an application where I need to take the shaft of a geared DC motor (spur gear box) into a hypocycloid speed reducer, which will be my final output shaft.

I know that hypocycloid gears have little to no backlash, however spur gears do have backlash.

My question is will my final output shaft still have backlash because of the spur gears, or will the hypocycloid completely eliminate the backlash on the shaft?

Thanks!

I would expect that the spur gear backlash would still be present, but the amount at the output shaft would be diminished by the hypocycloid gear ratio. Be carefull about low loads that might cause gear chatter in the spur gears.

Thanks Walt.

Is there anything I can do to reduce the gear chatter?

Put a drag brake on the final output shaft, so the gears are always loaded.

The accumulated angular backlash from multiple involute gear meshes is only a concern where there are reversing loads. And even if there are reversing loads, any accumulated backlash can be resolved by instrumenting the angular position of the output shaft itself. Hypocycloid drives are no magic solution. They are bulky, heavy, and expensive. It is also not entirely true that hypocycloids have "zero" backlash.

In reality, depending on your required gear ratio required, you may be better off using a pair of planetary involute gear stages. It will be cheaper, more efficient, more compact and lightweight than an epicycloid.
