Is NX8 backward compatable. I thought I heard something about it, I'm more than likely wrong.

NO FULL release of NX is "backward" compatible.

However, between maintenance relases files can move back, for example, I can open an NX 7.5.4.x file with NX 7.5.1.x, but I can't open that file using NX 7.0.x or any other release before NX 7.5. And NX 8.0 will be no different.

Now that being said, you have always been able to export the solid/sheet body models in a format which can be opened by older versions of NX, via...

File -> Export -> Parasolid...

...where you can select the target version of NX that you would like to open the MODELS in. Now this will only include the Solid and Sheet bodies, but NO curves, drawings, sketches, etc,.

No parametric CAD system has backward compatability with prior releases where you maintain full parametric control and features.
Exporting the solid/sheet body is the best you can hope for.

I didn't think so. Thanks for you answers. Saving to an earlier version would be quite a feat. Thanks again.
