Balloon Callouts

When I delete or add a part in a 3d assembly the related 2d drawing BOM renumbers all the callouts. Is renumbering balloon callouts permitted according to ANSI drafting? I couldn't find where it says its not permitted but I though I throw the question out here. Personally I don't think it mattes so long as the information is correct

You have to keep in mind any (all) documentation other than the drawing which may refer to those item numbers. While it may not seem an issue before the drawing is initially released, changing item numbers could cause a lot of headaches later on.

We use a seperate PLM system for BOM's so drawings just have balloon call outs and the BOM is not listed on the drawing its in Agile PLM. Still even looking through two drafting books, I didn't come across any rule that says renumbering is not permitted...

Do the item numbers in the balloons need to match the item numbers in the PLM system, and if so, does that system automatically update all documentation when a balloon number changes? I don't think there is anything against renumbering in the ASME standards; while renumbering may be permitted, the cross-reference between any documentation that refers to those item numbers needs to be maintained.

I only wish CAD was link to PLm it would make life peachy.. Yes the items numbers in Agile have to match the callouts on a assembly drawing. I didn't see any ANSI rule on renumbering either, so I think it'llbe okay. On the cross reference I learned the hard way year ago to never ever cross reference a balloon call out in a notes field or any other documents, its a disaster waiting to happen.

You generally DO NOT want to renumber the balloons if the drawing has been released and/or if any other documentation such as manuals, work instructions, and retrofit kits have been prepared. Those documents usually refer to item nos in the B/M. But I'm really surprised that there is no way to suppress that renumbering in the software. What program is it?

using solidworks. I haven't seen the option to supress renumbering, except locking.
The drawing is released, but the balloon callouts are not referenced in other documentation you mentioned.

I agree with tunalover... find out how to set the drawing parts list so that the rows become locked, preventing any future renumbering. I too would be suprised if it couldn't be done.

ASME Y13.34 has s section on revisions but doesn't explicitly address this issue.

Good practice is generally not to arbitrarily renumber items for reasons given above - even if not referenced in separate document they might be in a text note in the drawing that isn't intelligently linked etc.

There is a way to do this in our software but as we don't reference item numbers on other documents we don't usually remember to do this which can screw notes up, but round here no one seems to care much - don't get my rant started.

KENAT, your last sentence is why I never reference item numbers is other documents even if they are not intellegently linked to CAD

ChecherHater, I saw the S/W option yesterday, I'll have to play around with it to understand it more
